Painting an older New York apartment is mostly what happens before the paint. Plaster over masonry, hairline cracking, patches from previous work, and trim that has been coated so many times the profile has softened.
Paint does not hide any of that. It shows it, in the first low sun that crosses the wall.
The preparation
Plaster. Loose material comes off back to something sound, the edges are cut clean, and the patch is keyed in and worked flat rather than filled proud and sanded round. A patch that is filled rather than keyed comes back as a visible outline within a year.
Cracks. Hairline cracks in old plaster are usually movement rather than failure. They are opened, filled and taped where they need it, which is what stops them reappearing along the same line.
Trim. Where the profile has filled with paint, it is taken back far enough to get the detail returned, rather than adding another coat to the pile.

Sanding plaster makes fine dust that travels through an apartment and into the hallway. We seal the work area, run protection along the route in and out, and clean the common parts daily. In an occupied apartment this is most of what separates a job people can live through from one they cannot.

Preparation is priced separately from decoration, room by room, so you can see what the walls need before they take paint and what the paint itself costs. Where a wall needs repair, the quote says so, and the repair stays in even when it makes the figure higher. Can you repair cracked plaster before painting?
Yes, and in older buildings it is often the larger half of the work. We price preparation separately from decoration so you can see how the two compare rather than seeing one number.
How long does an apartment take?
A room is usually a matter of days and a whole apartment a matter of weeks, driven by how much repair the walls need rather than by their area. We can give you a firm answer once somebody has seen the walls in daylight.
